I am thankful

I am doing a research assignment on institutions for people with disabilities in the United States. That right guys We used to have institutions for people with disabilities. The article I fond described terrible conditions for people with disabilities. I am forever thankful to the people who helped closed institutions. I am also saddened by the fact that this is not talked about in United States History. This was a major movement, yet it gets no attention this movement has history and it needs to be taught to all kids in school. We do not forget to teach about Segration of minorities or Hitler  and the Nazi's   anyway  food   for thought
  Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Hi AZ!

There is a wonderful Disability History website which I could spend hours on.

Are you spending time in the library of that site? It has lots of original documents.

I don't believe institutions were a good solution, especially due to the poor conditions. However, in Canada, we have one negative effect of the closure of some of these places. Individuals with severe mental illnesses such as schnizophrenia who would have previousally been cared for are now living on the streets of our city because they are unable to meet their basic needs, even when provided with money and housing. Institiions were the wrong solution to the problem, however, there needs to be some sort of safeguard for individuals who are unable to care for themselves so they don't fall through the cracks.
