Workarounds that worked for me going through school

So yesterday I talked about how a few weeks ago I got a nickname which is a workaround for my real name.  Going through school there were lots of workarounds that worked.

 Slant board

Image description :A side view of a slant board  facing to the right

I used this in early elementary school to help me write.  I did not like  it because I wanted to be like everyone else.   This was an idea of my preschool teacher who helped tutor me.  It was helpful  once I agreed to use it

  Fischer  Scissors.

image description:blue scissors on a white background

Cutting things and doing art projects is a skill that is a staple in many kindergarten classrooms.  I have Cerebral Palsy and I had some fine motor difficulty which made cutting difficult for my tiny hands to use. My OT recommended   these special scissors that had bigger holes which make cutting easier.  My mom donated  multiple  scissors to my kindergarten class. This made cutting easier for everyone.

Adapted Seating

image description a blue classroom chair against a white background

Due to my Cerebral Palsy,  I had  trouble sitting well. My trunk muscles were so weak that it was easier for me  to put my feet up near my chest which did not make for great learning posture.    I had an adapted chair from   second to fifth grade. It was  a blue chair with a block on the back with a velcro cushion .

 Alpha Smart

Image Description  A blue keyboard with a tiny green screen.  says AlphaSmart 200 between the screen and keyboard. On a teal background

When I was in second grade , I moved to the public school so there were more resources to help me access the general education curriculum.   One was an Alpha Smart.  I am sure that many  disabled students  remember these word processors .  I had one in second grade. This helped me type my spelling words and  write stories. Nowadays   Ipads and tablets can do far more cool things than my word processor ever could.  I did not like using these  things because I wanted  to be like the other kids.  In third  grade, I got access to the school computer  and by fourth grade  I wanted  to write  and my teacher agreed to let me write.   In middle school, my aide  and I took notes.  In high school I took my own notes.

 Pulse Pen

Image Description. A black pen pointed  on the record button on the paper.  Next to it has  pause and stop, Then it has  jump the other things are  harder to make out.

In college I used a  Pulse pen to help me take notes. I highly recommend this for students who are auditory learners.  It is better than a tape recorder because  when you touch on a note it actually plays what was said while you are taking notes. I think this assisted me with doing well in college. I  graduated from Community College with honors.

  Sniffle Buddies

Image desciption  A blue wristband, On the front it says I'm blank 's buddy.  Then it has the Words Sniffle in green and buddies in blue along with their website  www.snifflebuddies.com

A cool wristband that helps me manage my drooling.

 Name Tags

A blue name tag that says on top " Hello my name is" and then  there is a place to write your name

I love name tags because when I meet someone that can't understand my real name I  just showed them my name tag. It is easy and quick.    A few weeks ago someone  gave me the nickname  that I now use to introduce to people. I love my new nickname.

Do you have any adaptation that you use? Want a more in-depth  description  of an adapted strategy?   Leave a comment below.

The life lesson behind Hide and Seek

Image description.  A young white girl covering her eyes. Three young kids run away.

So my two friends tandem blogged about the frustration they have when people  wait to ready as an excuse. They then invited  people to continue blogging.

One of my favorite  old-school childhood games is hidden and seek.   Kids count than say  "Ready or not  here I come."

When I was four about to turn five. My parents  had their version of  " Ready or not here I come,"  except they were not joking about it because  it was  the most important decision of their lives and would impact me for the rest of my life.     It was time to pick a school for me  to go to for Pre-Kindergarten.  Up to this point, I had been educated with  kids who had speech impairments in a county program the next town over.  But now it was kindergarten, the big leagues.  They decided to have me  apply for  a private school.   This school welcomed me in with  open arms ,but let's say for a minute  that they  said.

AZ isn't ready to be included because ...
* drools a lot , the other kids will think it's gross"

* has bad balance."

*does not know  how to pronounce her own name.

If you are  reading this thinking that they can't justify  special education for that.  Your  right they can't because it's against the law, but I have heard too many stories from parents of kids with intellectual disabilities of school officials  saying that their kid isn't ready because of their disability.  Because if  these same people  used  this I would have never stepped foot in  a general education class. Because   at 25. I have a real hard time saying my name, I still drool,  I have bad balance, but when they were willing  to make accommodations for me I was able to learn.

Instead at the private school, I was able to be myself, and my peers got to learn that disability was not something to be ashamed about.  I was able to drool and not have kids mind because sometimes I  drooled.   My drool and I were invited  to birthday parties and kids from my school went to my birthday parties.
In kindergarten, my    teacher was determined to  teach me how to jump rope.   When she was on yard duty she made it her personal mission to teach me how to jump rope.  By the end of the year, I was jumping rope.   That kid with  bad balance learned how to jump rope.  The kid with bad balance learned from her best friend how to do the monkey bars.

A few weeks ago, After that kid that could not pronounce her name, graduated with their BA. They had a work around. They  have a short name.  There are workarounds for a lot of things.  More on that  tomorrow.

Adults need  not be ready to include students with significant disabilities . They just need a belief that all kids can learn alongside their peers.  Students with significant disabilities  do not need to be  reading, or potty trained or  speaking in full sentences.    They are  ready and are coming.   Luckily there is a lot  research   that supports resources that supports  full inclusion. So schools that feel "not ready" can get ready because  ready or not here  comes disabled kids.  What you'll find is worth the finding when done right .

If by chance then do not judge

So, I am in speech therapy again and  am working hard and sometimes , ok a lot of the time,   I drool.  Once  while saying the /th/ sound  I accidentally  sprayed  my speech  therapist .  I got so embarrassed and rushed to apologize . She wasn't mad and  said that I couldn't help  it.

This week  in America two  black men were shot by the police.  This  is not new, but this is the first time I am talking about it.  Black lives , not all lives in particular  because black lives have been tossed away  without  public regard for all of America's history mater. They matter because they are  people who are a part of families. They matter because  the person killed by the police  is someone's son, brother, lover, friend. They matter.

One of the reasons that it seems silly to me to judge someone based on a characteristic , such as race, gender, sexual oreantation,  religion  or ability.  Is that  these are characteristics  that the person  themselves     has no control over.  The individual person does not  chose these characteristics yet in America we tend to  punish certain groups for a characteristic  that  they themselves did not have control over.   Just like disability, my mixed  race identity  has  contributed to the person that I am.  I am  a disabled women of color.  I knew about slavery  before it was taught to us.  My mom has stories of the Jim Crow south as do my grandparents.  It shapes me into a more conscious person.  It is not something I chose, but it has shaped me into the person that I am today.

To judge someone because they are  different for whatever reason is wrong.  Because it is all by chance.   Random Chance.  The bad thing is that some people think they are better because of chance.  There  is one race the human race.  We are better together.

Remember the Golden Rule:  Treat Others The Same Way You Want to be Treated

My deepest condolences to those that have loss  a person to police violence

Cerebral Palsy Party What inclusion look like

Hi guys today  is  #whatinclusionlookslike twitter chat today.  2pm so I thought I'd show you /tell you.

Inclusion is having parents read your bedtime stories  and expose you to books about different cultures  and  races.  Inclusion is   knowing that  college is  expected of you when you graduate high school

Inclusion  means  having access  to the playroom at the same  time as your siblings.

Inclusion is  playing  sports on traditional recreation leagues

And playing Piano (or doing whatever  after school activities  that  you / parents want not just the things for kids with disabilities

Inclusion is  about going on field trips with your class because   you are just another student

Inclusion is about knowing your siblings friends   because  you go to school with them.

Its being able to play sports on the same team as your siblings

Its about being on the School team ( even if its just a practice team)

 Or  Being a Team Manager

Its about going to  your high school's Senior Prom with a date.

Its about being   a leader and educating others about  things you care about .  I founded a Disability Awareness Club back in high school.

Its about having  General Education Professors be friending  you to the point where they find some Green to wear on World Cerebral  Palsy  Day  then wanting to take a picture to  put on their Instragram

 So to rap it up

  Inclusion is

 LOVE
 HOPE
 KINDNESS
   FAMILY MEMORIES

AND  CELEBRATIONS

LOTS AND LOTS OF CELEBRATIONS
FOR THINGS  BOTH  BIG AND SMALL

Happy Inclusive School Week

Hay  guys between  Finals and  everything I do not have  time  or  energy to come up with a thought provoking  post this year  for inclusive schools week, but I wanted to say Happy   Inclusive Schools Week.

Classes have  been going ok, but it has been hard to stay  motivated because  there is a good chance that I won't be able to be an inclusive teacher.  So  I am still trying to figure out what I can do   carrer  wise so it has been  a rocky journey these past  two months.  I wish there was  a way but  because  of  my  terrible articulation   it wouldn't be fair to  my students.

How  have  I been dealing with this.

It  depends some days  I am  ok  but  other days  I am  blue.  I'd give anything to be able to speak better but  at this point  according  to a speech thearpist chances are  not good  that I  will improve.  So continuing to push  forward   is very hard but I will keep at it.

Do I still belive in inclusion  despite this  News

Yes there have been  many  happy times throughout my school carer  where inclusion  has  been  great. I read some good books  played on playgrounds, explored my world.   I have met  so many great people  and  gotten  lots of  awards because I was in inclusive education.    Here  are some of them

31 for 21 Day Five : Laying the foundation

I have been playing golf   since  2007.   I  first learned about the sport   through  Special  Olympics.  My first year I  started  playing I  was in  skills and I could not hit the ball over  100  ft.

First   golf event with Special Olympics 2007

After  two months  I  decided that I wanted  to play for my high school  team.  My  dad thought it was foolish  but he  drove me  to the course  anyway. The  coach was a former  special education teacher and  felt that he could  handle  a teenager  with disabilities and   let me on the team.  By saying  yes to me  he allowed me to become a part of the golf team  he also  laid  the foundation for  something  magical  to happen    a  Monday  night   in  August.

 Good  chip
Now  I am  pretty good at golf,  I can  hit the ball  over  one  hundred  feet and   hit  really  good chip shots .    I  now no longer play skills,  I now  play  unified  golf.   Unified Golf is where   a person with a disability  plays alongside a person without disabilities  and  mentors  them  as  they  develop their skills   to play  individually.   I  really thought that my  partner would  be the same one as  last year but   she had work commitments. I asked   a girl on my  high school  golf team if she would be willing to play  with me.  She  couldn't , but she did come out to play with me  one  night.

That  night  I played the best game of my life.  I  got two  great chips and  great drives.   I also  was  able to connect  with a peer who is quickly becoming my friend.  We were not close friends   in high school , but we  were able to  reconnect,  She  originally lived on my street but moved  to another city. Being on that  team  laid  the foundation for us   to play together .

I know  a lot of  families of kids with disabilities who have to fight for  inclusive education.   My heart breaks for these families and their  kids.  I also feel very angry because educators  need to understand that   school  is more  than  test scores and academic honors.   It is  the center of a child's life.  Friends  come  from school experience  when   people  ship  students   off to another  place   there is no  foundation for  friendships to form between those with and without disabilities.  I am not saying that these friendships will  form while in school, but they  could,  but  as  people   grow and mature  and  see  their surroundings in a new  way  they might want to become  friends with  people  with disabilities, but if they did not have  the  chance to attend school  with people  who did  have disabilities   they will not know  where to look.

Inclusion  lays the foundation for   friendships.

A poem in Honor of Back to school

Today is the official start of  School for  local  schools  in the are,  My  Jr college starts back Monday.
( This year is   going to be a very special year for my family you will have to wait  a little bit longer to find out why )

Here is to a school year where all children are visible in local  neighborhood schools

 The invisible student

I am a child  just like you.
I go to school, and think recess is cool.
But there is something different  about me.
  I have an disability.

  I  sometimes drool
  You sometimes stare.
Many people pretend I am not there
  For  I am invisible
you can’t see me   I have  a disability.

District personal see  my  education a joke
so they bus me across town  even though the neighborhood school is not broke.
       there system is.
At school   I am  sent  down the   hall.
The classroom door closes and  that is all.
I  am there all day  down the hall.
     Its not fair,

  Its not  fair
 it can’t be
  I should be treated fair
 as an equal you see
   We  learn about  freedom
we learn about  the world, but  we are not there.

 Left out  of pictures
   of social life
the websites  about the school do not include us.
Why can’t  I be in the pictures?
Why  do  my  parents need to fight  for me to be seen?
      Seen  as a  disabled person
  seen  for me.
  Inclusive education that is key.
Its time to close   separate  classroom.
 Cause Separate is not equal
 We learned that in 1954.

Its time for  us to become visible-
for us to be seen.
For us to be in all general education classes
 Learning and living about  Freedom
  Learning  how to read.
Learning  about  Romeo,  Juliet, and  Huckleberry Finn.
    Discovering our  past
   Exploring through  experiments
                 Its time for all that
Its time to presume competence for  all kids
Teach us  everything so we have a chance at learning  about this world.

Its time to move the desk  from down the hall.
 Into same aged classrooms.
   Open  the classroom
  Let me in
Now is a good time to begin.

 Have a great year  everyone.

I do my own laundry

I do my own Landry at home

So  for those of you that do not know  what is happening  read here.   Then come back, then read here.

                                                                           HOW
                                       IS
  THIS
OK?

HOW  IS OKEY FOR ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE   TO BECOME SERVANTS TO THE OTHER?
      ITS NOT

WHAT MESSAGE  DOES IT SEND TO THE OTHER  STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL.

THEY ARE SEPARATE, THEY ARE SPECIAL THEY DO NOT BELONG.

THIS IS  TOOO IMPORTANT.    WHEN PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ARE GIVEN   THE DIRTY  JOBS   AT  11 OR 12 , WHAT MESSAGE  DOES THAT SEND TO THEM.  WHERE IS THE  PRESUMPTION OF COMPETENCE?   its not there.    WHERE ARE  THE BOOKS, MATH BLOCKS,   EGYPTIAN TUMS  WITH MUMMIES,   WHERE ARE THE  SCINCE EXPERIMENTS.

THOSE THINGS MATTER.  Reading matters because information is  in these  books. Stories   of our past.  Explores   Dragons    Shakespeare they matter .

Writing  to be  able to connect  with people over social media  is important.   Sharing our own stories  so that future generations  will know us.

History   the stories of the past  are a light to  understanding our future.

Science   to discover  how the world works,   It is also fun,

So in short  why are you wasting precious learning time  doing laundry in middle school when  most kids don't.

There was a  time in American history where one  group  of people  did the dirty  work in America.   They  did the laundry.  They   cleaned up the house, They   worked  the  fields  and picked cotton too,    They were slaves in America.  We now  look down on this  as a  society . Although this isn't slavery. Its  still dehumanizing.

Blogging against disablism day 2015 : My ideal classroom

Blogging Against Disablism Day, May 1st 2015

This quarter  I am venturing into  my field of choice,  special education,  my  goal: to become a special education teacher  who provides  inclusive services to high school students with intellectual disabilities .

image of and empty classroom. The classroom has desks  a flag and Television

My  program would  have  kids with intellectual disabilities included for English, History, and Science and  elective with modifications and  support.  They would  be doing work that  is connected to what the other  students in class are doing  modified to their  level.

My students  would have math and life skills  in a special education class that I would teach.  I say math because some of my students might need  life skill math.     The math would be temporary   I would reach out to general education  math  teacher with the hope  of  having students with intellectual disabilities included. I would  try to offer life skills for general education students because  all kids need to learn life skills,   Life skills would be one period.

A lunch time sandwich shop  which  students with and without disabilities would get work  experience,

Office Aids  and on campus jobs for  my students.

A chance to participate in sports and  plays or anything else that students are interested in.

Homework every night  to reinforce learning concepts.

Special Olympics  practices that would be healed  AFTER SCHOOL  once a week and compete in the community program.

Independence jars where  students  can do things both at school and in the community and then  get  tokens  to earn  for their jars.

     Presumed  Competence

Fun club  which would take place monthly. Students  with and without disabilities would be invited  to do fun things in the community.  Events would include   activities in their communities.   This would be done after school.

  Lofty  goals  and high expectations.

My  main goal for my  students would be to learn and have fun. (in that order)

Who  knows  as I go through my  teaching maybe  I will  add more things to this list. One thing that will not change in my mind is  inclusion in core subjects.   I am a die hard inclusion fan for life.

Inclusion matters because __________________

Hay  guys  so this week is Inclusive Schools Week

I  asked  people to  fill in the blank with their own words.
                          Inclusion matter because ____________________________.

Here  is  what   Parents that have children with disabilities    said.

Inc
lusion matters because my daughter is no less of a person than yours.

Inclusion matters because disability is a normal part of life.

" Inclusion matters because [its the] same age kids just different rates of learning! Enriches everyone's lives!" (added  to make  the sentience flow better )

"Inclusion matters because everyone needs to feel like they fit in somewhere."

"Inclusion matters because it works!"
" Inclusion matters because [its the] same age kids just different rates of learning! Enriches everyone's lives!" (added  to make  sense )
"Inclusion matters because it enriches everyones life."
It matters because it allows everyone to have the chance to become the people they are meant to be. Because each of us are divine and sacred and with inclusion we send that message.

Inclusion matters because  it means we are all equal
Inclusion matters because disabilities are part of the human experience. We all have different abilities, strengths, weaknesses. Inclusion matters because we teach all students that we need to embrace and accept all people no matter their differences, and that when we all work together, we all benefit from the experience. Inclusive schools foster the building of an inclusive society.

Inclusion matters because   everyone wants to be included

Inclusion matters because my daughter is no less of a person than yours.

Inclusion matters because disability is a normal part of life.

" Inclusion matters because [its the] same age kids just different rates of learning! Enriches everyone's lives!" (added  to make  the sentience flow better )

I asked  people I know  and  this is  what they said

A local mom who has a child  with CP said

Inclusion matters because we all have to live in this world together, the earlier everyone learns that the better

An Author who wrote a book about inclusion said.

Inclusion matters because we all live together, work together and play together. We don't have special towns, special jobs...so there should be no special education. Only services." The author of Who's the Slow Learner who I met this past March.

My Uncle , says.

"Inclusion matters because humans are not solitary animals. The need for togetherness is strong in our species."

My  second grade   teacher says

"Inclusion matters because all individuals disabled or not, should be entitled to equal opportunity, choice and equal access to education, and community resources."

What I Say

Inclusion matters because separate is not equal. We all only have one life so its important to make the most out of it. Inclusion allows people with disabilities a chance to have memories. As I look back on my school years, my favorite memories happened alongside peers. I enjoyed going on field trips in elementary school. I enjoyed science experiments in high school. I went to prom. I learned about our countries history. I wrote stories. In short I had a childhood similar to those in my town. Inclusion also matters because it means that future generations may not be as ablest as previous generations and it gives me confidence to explore my community on my own because although I may be different , I have been taught that this is much my world as an able bodied person.
